After You Pass: The Next Steps for Your Citizenship Application
Walking out of the test centre with a "PASS" result is a huge relief. But many applicants are confused about what paperwork they get and how to prove their result to the Home Office.
Here is what you need to know about the post-test process.
1. The "Unique Reference Number" (URN)
In the past, candidates received a stamped paper certificate. This is no longer the case.
- You will receive an email (usually before you even leave the building) containing your Unique Reference Number (URN).
- Important: This number is the *only* proof you have. Do not lose this email. Write the number down in a safe place.
2. Using the URN in your Application
When you fill out your online application for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship, there will be a section asking: *"Have you passed the Life in the UK Test?"*
- Select "Yes."
- Enter your URN in the box provided.
The Home Office will use this number to verify your result directly on their internal system. You do not need to upload a scan of a certificate.
3. Does the result expire?
No. Once you pass the Life in the UK test, the result is valid forever.
- If you take the test for Settlement (ILR) today, you can use the same URN for your Citizenship application 1, 2, or 5 years later. You never have to take the test twice.
4. What if I lose my URN?
If you lose your email or the letter given to you at the centre:
- Log in to your account on the official booking website (lituktestbooking.co.uk).
- Your URN should be listed under your "Exam History" or "Results" tab.
- If you cannot find it, you must contact the Life in the UK helpline (0800 015 4245). Note that they may charge a fee or take time to retrieve old records, so it is safer to back up your URN immediately.
