Booking your Life in the UK test sounds simple, but thousands of applicants every year lose money or get turned away from the test centre due to simple administrative errors.

Here is a step-by-step guide to booking your test safely and correctly.

1. Use the ONLY Official Website

Do not search "Book Life in the UK test" on Google and click the first ad. There are many "scam" or "agency" websites that look official but charge you an extra £20 or £30 "booking fee."

There is only one official booking link: www.gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test

  • Official Cost: £50
  • Agency Cost: £70 - £100 (Avoid these!)

2. Your ID Must Match EXACTLY

When you book the test, you must register with a valid ID (Passport, BRP, etc.).

The Mistake: If you register as "John Smith" but your ID says "John A. Smith," you will be rejected at the test centre. You will not be allowed to take the test, and you will not get a refund of your £50.

The Fix: Check your ID document carefully. Does it have a middle name? Does it use your maiden name? Enter it into the booking form exactly as it appears on the plastic/paper.

3. Proof of Address traps

You no longer need to bring paper proof of address (like a utility bill) to the test centre, as your address is checked during the application process. However, the postcode you enter when booking must match where you live.

The Rule: You must take the test at one of the 5 test centres closest to your home postcode. You cannot choose a centre in a different city just because it has better availability.

What happens on the day?

  1. Arrive Early: Get there 30 minutes before your slot.
  2. Security: It is like airport security. You will empty your pockets and verify your ID.
  3. The Test: You have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions.
  4. The Result: You will get a pass/fail result immediately. You will also receive a "Unique Reference Number" (URN). Keep this safe! You need it for your citizenship or settlement application.
